Lucilia (genus) Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830
This is a large genus of blowflies with several hundred species and a wide distribution. The adults visit flowers and the larval stages are ectoparasites on mammals or live in animal carcasses and garbage. Several species can cause myiasis in domestic animals and are of veterinary concern. For example, Lucilia cuprina and L. sericata are important pests of sheep. Infestations can lead to the death of the animal. Other species are considered nuisance pests multiplying in garbage dumps.
The adults have a metallic, greenish colour and the genus is often called "green bottle flies". The genus is characterized by its wing venation and by the arrangement of bristles on several body parts.
Type species: Lucilia caesar
