Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830) - (Australian sheep blowfly)

This blowfly is widely distributed and often only regarded as a nuisance pest or a cause of secondary myiasis. This means, the flies use carrion or existing wounds in live animals for breeding. However, in Australia and New Zealand it causes primary myiasis in sheep and significant reductions of wool quality/quantity. There, it can also result in the death of several million sheep each year. The adults are metallic green with reddish-brown eyes and usually a little bit larger than house flies (5-10 mm long).
