Fungi of the genus Huntiella are widely distributed and cause stem diseases on various trees. They usually infect freshly made wounds on trees and infections are often associated with nitidulid beetles and flies (Hernández-Restrepo et al., 2018).
The species are very similar to those of the genus Ceratocystis. Both genera are separated based on the DNA structure and morphological features. In the original description of Huntiella by de Beer et al., (2014) it is stated that the "most distinctive features of this genus are the conical spines on the ascomatal bases, the disk-like bases of the ascomatal necks, and the hat-shaped ascospores."
The type species of the genus is Huntiella moniliformis.
For a taxonomic review of the genus see de Beer et al., 2014.
