Fusarium xylarioides Steyaert 1948

The fungus causes tracheomycosis of coffee or coffee wilt disease in east and central Africa. The disease causes complete defoliation and wilt with characteristic blue-black discolourations under the bark.

The disease has caused severe outbreaks in African coffee plantings, first in the period 1920-1960 and again since the 1970s. For example in the 1990s, on arabica coffee in Ethiopia and on robusta coffee in the Democratic Republic of Congo. See Peck et al. (2021) for a genetic analysis of the evolution of this pathogen.
