Foveavirus (genus)

This genus of plant viruses contains viruses related to the Apple stem pitting virus. They are widely distributed and cause stem pitting and leaf spot diseases (mosaic and ring-spot symptoms) on fruit trees and grapevine. The name is derived from the Latin word fovea, a pit. The natural mode of spread is unknown and the viruses are usually transmitted through contaminated grafting tools.

The particles are long (800 nm or longer), flexuous and non-enveloped. The genome consists of linear ssRNA(+), around 8.4-9.3 kb large. The genus is similar to the genus of Carlavirus, but the genome has 5 ORFs and a large replication protein.
