Eutypella parasitica R.W. Davidson & R.C. Lorenz (1938)

This fungus infects the trunk and branches of maple trees (Acer). The disease is common and native to North America. It was first reported from Europe (Slovenia) in 2005 (Jurc et al., 2006) and has spread to other European countries.

Various species of Acer become infected. The fungus often enters through wounds and initially develops under the bark. Young trees can be killed by the disease and the trunks of older trees can suffer significant damage. Perithecia are around 700 µm wide and ascospores are bean-shaped and brown, measuring about 9 x 3 µm (Jurc et al., 2016).
