This fungus was previously considered to have a wide host range, but is now regarded as being confined to plants in the Polygonaceae. The sugarbeet powdery mildew and strains infecting Chenopodiaceae are now referred to as E. betae. Strains infecting Apiaceae are now referred to as E. heraclei.
