The grass is an important weed of rice, e.g. in California where yields can be reduced by up to 50% if unmanaged. It is well adapted to rice fields and can germinate under water in a low oxygen environment. The weed is difficult to control with herbicides and several populations have developed simultaneous resistance to most available grass herbicides available for rice.
