Diaporthe ampelina (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) R.R. Gomes, C. Glienke & Crous 2013 - (dead-arm disease of grapevine)
This fungus is widely distributed in grapevine growing regions of Europe, North America, Australia or South Africa. The species name is derived from the Greek word ampelos (άμπελος), the grapevine plant. The diseases caused by D. ampelina include leaf spot, cane or trunk diseases, and dead-arm disease. The latter name has been also applied to other grapevine diseases like Eutypa lata. Buds, shoots and grape bunches may also become infected.
On the grapevine leaves, small spots with a necrotic centre are formed. On the cane irregular lesions develop and affected berries shrivel and rot, leading to premature fruit drop. The dead leaves and branches can translate into crop losses of up to 30-50%. Pruning wounds are believed to be one of the entry points for the pathogen.
