This fungus causes a form of apple Valsa canker, see also Cytospora mali. Pear trees may also become infected. C. ceratosperma has been mainly reported from eastern Asia. It enters the trunk through small wounds and disease symptoms develop predominantly in spring and early summer. Cankers are formed and the disease results in dead branches and in serious cases causes tree mortality.
