Sporobolus (weeds) R. Br. - (cordgrasses, dropseed)

This genus of grasses contains nearly 200 species which are mainly found in warmer regions. The species are considered to be less desirable as forage grasses and several species are considered weeds in grasslands and turf, for example smutgrass, Sporobolus indicus or environmental weeds like Sporobolus alterniflorus. The genus is characterized by its seed dispersal mechanism. The spherical or egg-shaped seeds are ejected from their pericarp when it becomes wet.
