Coniophora puteana (Schum. ex Fr.) P. Karst. 1868

This fungus causes brown rot on wood structures. The attacked wood has an internal brownish colour and breaks easily, but there are usually few signs of the fungus on the wood surfaces. On the infested wood, typically cracks form across as well as along the grain.

For its development, the fungus requires a high humidity inside the wood, around 50-60%. It can be avoided by keeping the wood dry. The fruiting bodies are flat layers on the wood surface which are initially white and later turn brown.
