Colletotrichum musae (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) Arx 1957 - (banana anthracnose)

The fungus is widely distributed in tropical regions and causes postharvest anthracnose of banana fruits. Infections typically occur before or during harvesting of the fruits, but only become visible during the ripening process. For example, during harvest the fungus might enter the fruits through the cut surfaces which leads to tip rot on the fruits, but also to crown-rot of the banana plants. Alternatively, infections can lead to brown or black lesions on other parts of the fruits. Orange-brown acervuli (asexual fruiting bodies) develop on the lesions under conditions of high humidity.
