Colletotrichum gossypii Southw. 1891 - (cotton anthracnose)

This fungus is found in tropical and some subtropical regions, causing anthracnose (or ramulosis disease) of cotton. On seedlings, a lethal damping-off disease can develop. On infected older plants, reddish or dark lesions appear on the bolls causing boll rot. Other parts of the plant are also affected. Further, stunting and the excessive formation of lateral buds (ramulosis) has been described.

The fungus is often transmitted through infected seeds and seed treatments with fungicides is a common control method. It can also persist on debris of cotton plants.
