Colletotrichum falcatum Went 1893

The fungus is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical countries. It causes red rot of sugarcane which is characterized by a reddening of the internal tissues of the stalk with white spots. The fungus mainly infests the sugar producing cells in the stalk, resulting in sugar losses of up to 40%. It spreads through infected canes that are used for planting.
