Calacarus heveae Feres, 1992
This rust mite feeds on the leaves of rubber trees in South America. The feeding initially results in small chlorotic spots on the upper side of the leaves. The leaves then turn yellow, dry up and drop prematurely. Outbreaks have been reported in parts of Brazil since the early 1990s, resulting in up to 75% defoliation and serious losses of latex production (e.g. see Castro et al., 2013).
