Alopecurus L. - (foxtail grasses)
The genus contains more than 30 species of grasses and is widely distributed. The species are fodder plants and ornamentals, but several are important weeds like blackgrass which can be a problem in cereals and other crops. The pollen can cause allergies.
The plants can grow up to 1 meter high and are characterized by their cylindrical and elongated inflorescences containing many flowers. The spikelets are articulated below the glumes.
