Anopheles stephensi (Liston, 1901) - (Asian malaria mosquito)
The mosquito is an important malaria vector in western Asia, the Near East and the Horn of Africa. It is related to Anopheles gambiae and transmits an estimated 12% of the malaria cases in India. Control efforts with insecticides can be difficult due to pesticide resistance.
It feeds during the night and commonly bites humans, preferring humans to domestic animals. It breeds in various natural and man-made habitats like pools, ponds, streams, tree holes or swamps as well as in water containers and wells. The adults have a similar size to those of A. gambiae.
