Anopheles punctulatus Donitz, 1901
This mosquito feeds on humans and other mammals in Papua New Guinea and neighbouring countries. It is considered to be an important malaria vector. Breeding has been mainly recorded from small, shallow and temporary pools or puddles of fresh water, including hoof prints. The larvae can survive in damp mud when these pools dry out and eggs can withstand desiccation.
A. punctulatus forms a species group with > 10 other closely related species, several of which are also malaria vectors, namely Anopheles farauti, A. koliensis, and A. hinesorum.
