The bug is a predator of whiteflies, aphids and thrips which is native to the Mediterranean region. It is commercially produced in Europe and used mainly in greenhouses against the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci biotype B) and other biotypes of the sweet potato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).

M. melanotoma is very similar to Macrolophus pygmaeus and both species can be easily confused.
