Zur Schädlingsfauna der Kapverdischen Inseln
[On the pests of the Cape Verde Islands]
Zeitschrift für angewandte Entomologie - Journal of Applied Entomology 86 (3), 320-336
Abstract: The pest status of Orthoptera in the Cape Verde Islands is discussed. Oedaleus senegalensis is widely distributed and is a major pest on beans and maize, and in 1976 chemical control measures were required. Natural enemies include most birds, notably the grey-headed kingfisher, Halcyon leucocephala. Also widespread is Catantops axillaris which occasionally damages young maize plants and acacia. Solitary Schistocerca gregaria and Locusta migratoria migratorioides have been seen on the island but these have no pest status Anacridium melanorhodon is a pest of fruit, trees such as mango and had to be chemically controlled in 1976.
