Xanthomonas fragariae Kennedy & King 1962

The bacterium causes angular leaf spot in strawberries. It is wide-spread and of considerable economic concern in nurseries. It appears to spread through the trade of runner plants with latent invisible infections.

The pathogen invades strawberry leaves through stomata, hydathodes or wounds and colonizes the intercellular space for multiplication. The first visible symptoms occur as water-soaked bacterial lesions which are restricted by small leaf veins and appear angular in shape. Later, these lesions spread over the foliage, form larger necrotic spots and lead to plant death. Strawberry yield is reduced by up to 80% and fruits can show discolouration.

Vernacular names
• Deutsch: eckige Blattfleckenkrankheit der Erdbeere
• English: angular leaf spot of strawberry
• Français: bactériose du fraisier
tache anguleuse de la fraise

Chemical control of the disease is difficult. Treatments with streptomycin and oxytetracycline are effective but these antibiotics are not registered due to various concerns. Mixtures of copper compounds and the fungicide mancozeb are also effective but can be phytotoxic. The development of resistant cultivars is in progress.
