Xanthomonas campestris pv. vitians (Brown) Dye 1974

This pathovar causes bacterial leafspot on lettuce and other plants. The symptoms include brown to black, greasy leaf lesions which result in unmarketable lettuce heads. The disease is wide-spread and no chemicals are avilable for effective control. The development of resistant cultivars is ongoing.
