This smut fungus is wide-spread and often found on grasses of the genus Holcus. It forms sori on stripes which run parallel to the leaf veins. The spore masses are black to dark brown and the spores have a diameter of approximately 10 µm. They are covered with spines (on average ½ µm high) at a density of around 10 per µm2.
