[Natural enemies of Citrus woolly whitefly, Aleurothrixus floccosus (Maskell) and nesting whitefly, Paraleyrodes minei Laccarino (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in Hatay Province, Turkey]
Turkish Journal of Entomology 36 (1), 147-154
Abstract: Studies were carried out on natural enemies of Citrus woolly whitefly, Aleurothrixus floccosus (Maskell) and nesting whitefly, Paraleyrodes minei Iaccarino (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) during the years of 2005-2006 in Hatay province, Turkey. Parasitoid samples were reared separately from citrus leaves infested by A. floccosus and P. minei, collected from surveyed districts. Adults of predatory species collected from infested trees directly, while pre-adult stages reared on their preys. Natural enemies of A. floccosus were found as Clitostethus arcuatus Risso, Cryptoleamus montrouzieri Mulsant, Chilocorus bipustulatus L., Serangium parcesetosum Sicard (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Conwentzia sp. (Neuroptera: Coniopterygidae) and Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), besides the host-specific parasitoid, Cales noacki Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). The natural parasitization ratios of C. noacki on A. floccosus populations were found as 88.71 % in Erzin, and 70.27 % in Samandağ, during the years of 2005-2006. Cunaxa potchensis Den Heyer (Acari: Cunaxidae), C. arcuatus, C. bipustulatus, Conwentzia sp. C. carnea were found as predators and Encarsia hispida De Santis (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) was found as a parasitoid of P. minei. The parasitization ratio of E. hispida on P. minei was found as max. 38.73 %. In addition to the Arthropod natural enemies, entomopathogenic fungus, Cladosporium sp. (Moniliales: Dematiaceae) was observed to develop upon both of the whitefly species colonies. In conclusion the whitefly species, especially A. floccosus, would build up their outbreaks in the case of absence of the natural enemies and/or favorable climatic conditions.
