Trametes Fr. 1835
This genus of wood-decaying fungi contains around 50 species. Most live saprophytically on dead wood only. However, some species degrade timber and wood products and several are considered plant pathogens, actively invading the wood of living trees and grapevine, e.g. through wounds. The genus is characterized by the morphology of the shelf-like fruiting bodies (basidiocarp) with the pore-shaped spore-bearing structures as well as by the DNA sequence of its members.
