Tomato apical stunt viroid (TASVd)

Infections by this viroid can be common in Europe, Africa and Asia on tomatoes and other Solanaceae. Epidemics have been reported from greenhouses. On tomatoes, the symptoms include shortened apical internodes and tiny, deformed, and brittle chlorotic leaves. Ripe fruits are reduced in size and pale red. The host plants can be mechanically infected with the viroid and the natural mode of spread appears to be mainly through seed transmission.

Most stable structure of Tomato apical stunt viroid (TASVd). The nucleotides in black denote those of low SHAPE reactivities (0–0.40). Those in orange are of intermediate reactivities (0.40–0.85) and those in red are highly reactive (>0.85). The different regions are delimited by full lines, and the presence of both the A-motif and the loop E are noted (click on image to enlarge it).
