Tobacco etch virus (TEV)

The virus is widely distributed in North and Central America. It has been also recorded from Europe and Asia. The host plants are mainly from the family Solanaceae like tobacco, tomato, Capsicum and potatoes. The symptoms include chlorosis, leaf mosaic and stunting.

The virus causes serious damage when it co-occurs with other viruses like Cucumber mosaic virus or Potato virus Y. It is transmitted by Myzus persicae and, less efficiently, also by Aphis gossypii. The RNA genome contains about 9,500 nucleotides and translates into a polyprotein of about 3,000 amino acids.
