This genus of fungi is related to the genus Acremonium. It is widely distributed and includes around 10 species. Some are plant pathogens like Sarocladium oryzae which causes sheath rot of rice. Others are saprobes or human pathogens. All plant pathogenic species form cylindrical conidia arranged in slimy heads.
