Puccinia emaculata Schwein. 1832
This fungus is found in North America. It causes a rust disease on Panicum capillare (witchgrass). Before 2017, it has been regarded as the main causal agent of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) rust in North America. However, that disease is caused by several other Puccinia species, mainly by Puccinia novopanici. Apart from the different host range, P. emaculata also has smaller urediniospores (mean: 25 × 23 μm) and teliospores (mean: 33 × 21 μm), as well as a distinct DNA structure, see Demers et al. (2017) and Kenaley et al. (2018).
