Puccinia P. Micheli (1729) - (against weeds)
Puccinia is a very import and large genus of plant pathogenic rust fungi with several thousand species described. Many infect crops and can cause significant damage. Like other rust fungi, species of Puccinia may have a number of different stages and spore forms as well as primary and secondary hosts. See the page Puccinia species on crops for those species as well as a general description of the genus and the life cycles and spore forms of its species.
However, various species, strains or varieties are specialized on certain weeds and are regarded as useful natural enemies. This page deals with the latter group. Several weed pathogens have been deliberately released in some countries as part of classical biological control programs. Examples of important weed pathogens include:
- Puccinia myrsiphylli - introduced into Australia against the weed bridal creeper
- Puccinia punctiformis - infects Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense)
- Puccinia xanthii - infects several weed species like ragweeds (Ambrosia)
For a taxonomic review of the genus see Marin-Felix et al. (2017).
Currently, the following species of weed pathogens have been entered into the system:
