Puccinia punctiformis (weed pathogen) (F. Strauss) Röhl. 1813
This fungus causes a rust disease on Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense), an important weed of grasslands and cereals in North America and several other regions. Infected plants often become chlorotic and later necrotic.
P. punctiformis forms dark brown uredinia on the lower leaf surfaces and the stems with spherical urediniospores which have a diameter of about 25-30 µm. Telia are often found on the stem where they overwinter. Teliospores are oval and 2-celled. Aecia are found on the same host, mainly on the upper leaf surfaces.
In its native Europe, the fungus is spread by the weevil Ceratapion onopordi which is also studied as biological control agent of that weed.
