Pseudozyma flocculosa (mycoparasite) (Traquair, L.A. Shaw & Jarvis) Boekhout & Traquair 1995
This fungus is a mycoparasite, mainly of plant pathogenic powdery mildews (Erysiphales). It produces flocculosin, a compound with powerful antimicrobial activity. A. flocculosa is effective against important plant pathogens like Blumeria graminis, Erysiphe or Podosphaera species. It has been commercialised as a biological control agent against such pathogens under the name Sporodex®.
Taxonomic note: - It has been suggested to move this species to the genus Anthracocystis (Piątek et al., 2015). However, Richard R. Bélanger (personal communication) considers this unjustified, based on a DNA analysis of the type culture.
Synonyms:
Anthracocystis flocculosa
Sporothrix flocculosa
