Pityophthorus Eichhoff, 1864

This genus of twig and bark beetles is widely distributed and contains almost 400 species, more than half of them in North and Central America. Several species are considered pests of conifer and hardwood trees like pine, spruce and walnut. Some also transmit important fungus diseases to their hosts, e.g. the thousand cankers disease of walnuts by Pityophthorus juglandis or pitch canker of pines by several other Pityophthorus species.

The adults are typically 1-3 mm long, elongated (2-3 x longer than wide) and dark brown. The taxonomical characteristics are, among others, the structure of the elytra, pronotum and antennae.

Type species: Pityophthorus lichtensteinii
