Pinus contorta (weed) Douglas ex Louden - (lodgepole pine)

This species of pine tree is native to western parts of North America. However, it has been extensively planted in Europe and in the southernmost areas of South America and the Australia/New Zealand region.

In countries where it has been introduced like Chile, New Zealand or Sweden it is regarded as invasive, disturbing the ecology of the invaded areas. For example, P. contorta has been introduced into the treeless steppe of Patagonia, Chile to control erosion caused by historical fires and cattle farming. This introduction has had a serious negative impact on the ecology and biodiversity of that region (e.g. Bravo-Monasterio et al., 2016).
