Phyllachora Nitschke ex Fuckel 1870

The members of this genus of plant pathogenic fungi cause tar spot diseases. Several species infect cereals and grasses like Phyllachora maydis, a pathogen of maize that is common in the Americas. The fruiting bodies (perithecia) are raised, dark brown to black and usually shiny. They have an elongated shape on grasses and cereals, but are often roundish on other plants.
