Philaenus italosignus Drosopoulos & Remane, 2000
This species is a polyphagous spittlebug, found in southern parts of Italy. It has been recorded mainly from forest and park environments, feeding on trees like oak, maple, cherry or pine trees. It is not regarded as a pest as such, but has been experimentally confirmed to be able to transmit the olive quick decline syndrome caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa. However it is less common and less virulent, compared to the main vector of that disease, Philaenus spumarius (Cavalieri et al., 2019).
P. italosignus breeds on the perennial herb Asphodelus ramosus (Panzavolta et al., 2019). Its morphology is very similar to that of P. spumarius. However both species can be separated by the structure of the male genitalia (EPPO Bulletin, 2020).
