Philaenus Stal, 1864
This genus of spittle bugs includes around 50 species, some of which are regarded as pests of crops like grapevine or olive trees. More importantly, they may transmit destructive plant diseases. For example, the meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius is polyphagus and transmits the plant pathogenic bacterium Xylella fastidiosa.
