Phanerochaete chrysosporium Burds. 1974

This fungus causes white-rot and decay of the wood from various trees. Since it degrades many organic substances, it has been also studied for use against toxic organic pollutants (e.g. see Loomis et al., 1997). P. chrysosporium forms flat fruiting bodies with egg-shaped to elliptical blastoconidia (8-10 x 5-8 µm) and thick-walled chlamydospores (~ 50 µm in diameter).
