Paraphomopsis obscurans (Ellis & Everh.) Udayanga & Castl. 2021

This fungus is widely distributed and causes strawberry leaf blight. The disease results in yield losses and can be lethal under environmental conditions favourable for the pathogen. Outbreaks have been reported, e.g. in 2019 in Indiana, U.S. (Udayanga et al., 2021).

Infections start as small reddish or purple spots often at the leaf margins. These enlarge and develop dark brown centres. Large parts of the leaves can be affected, weakening the plants, and the disease might spread to stems and fruits.

Management options include fungicides and cultural methods like planting in well drained soil and in open areas to reduce moisture. The environmental conditions are very important for the disease development (Nita et al., 2003).
