Orthoptera (locusts, grasshoppers, crickets, etc.)
The insects belonging to this order are characterized by strong hind legs (adapted for jumping) and by mandibulate mouthparts. Females often have a well developed ovipositor and stridulatory organs are frequently present. The wings can be absent in some species. The nymphal stages go through a slight metamorphosis. Typically, orthopterans are medium sized to large plant-feeding insects and include many plant pests.
