Ophiognomonia (Sacc.) Sacc. 1899
The genus contains around 50 species which are mainly endophytes in temperate regions. However, several are plant pathogens causing important diseases. The host plants are mainly trees from families like the families Betulaceae, Fagaceae or Juglandaceae.

The ascospores are elongated and often septate, but there are no reliable morphological characters to identify members of this genus. The genus is defined by the DNA structure of several genes like the translation elongation factor 1α or the ITS region.

Type species: Ophiognomonia melanostyla
