Neomusotima conspurcatalis (weed bioagent) (Warren, 1896) - (brown Lygodium moth)

This small moth (wingspan ~ 10 mm) is a biological control agent of the invasive Old World climbing fern, Lygodium microphyllum. The moth is native to south-eastern Asia and has been released in Florida, starting in 2008. It established readily at most release sites (Smith et al., 2014) causing defoliation of the weed.

The larvae feed on the leaves and pupate hanging attached to the underside of the leaves or rachises. One life cycle lasts around 4 weeks and up to 10 generations can be completed within a year.
