Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris, 1776) (pea aphid)

The aphid is native in the Palaearctic region, but is now wide-spread. It attacks legumes (Fabaceae) like alfalfa, peas, broad beans or clover, causing chlorosis, wilting and crop losses. Especially the growing tips of legumes are infested. The existence of biotypes which are adapted to various wild and cultivated legumes has been demonstrated. A. pisum is a vector of various virus diseases (e.g. Bean yellow mosaic virus, Bean leafroll virus, Faba bean necrotic yellows virus or Pea enation mosaic virus-1).

The overwintering eggs hatch to wingless females in spring which propagate parthenogenetically. Winged, dispersing females are produced in certain conditions like during overcrowding. Winged males and egg-laying females are produced in autumn. These lay eggs.

The aphid is about 3 mm long, bright green with long cornicula. It can be confused with Acyrthosiphon kondoi.
