Acyrthosiphon kondoi Shinji - (bluegreen aphid)

The aphid is native to Asia and has been introduced into North America and New Zealand in the 1970s. Other regions have been invaded subsequently and it is now wide-spread. The aphid is similar to the pea aphid but slightly smaller, about 2½-3 mm long and blue-green in colour. The 3rd antennal segment is diagnostic. It infests alfalfa, lupin and other legumes, causing chlorosis and stunting. It is a vector of viruses like Bean leafroll virus or Alfalfa mosaic virus.

The aphid overwinters as eggs which hatch to females in spring. These reproduce parethenogenetically and by live birth. Winged females are produced intermittently and disperse. In autumn oviparous, winged females are produced, but males are rarely found.
