Pea enation mosaic virus-1 (PEMV-1)

This virus causes the pea enation mosaic disease in obligatory association with the Umbravirus Pea enation mosaic virus-2 (PEMV-2), an example of symbiogenesis. Both viruses are encapsidated in separate icosahedral particles of similar size. PEMV-1 encodes the coat protein and the protein involved in aphid transmission, whereas PEMV-2 encodes the movement protein.

The most characteristic symptom of the disease is the formation of enations (small scaly, leaflike structures) on the abaxial, i.e. downy, leaf side. Other symptoms include chlorotic, translucent or necrotic lesions, malformation of leaves and stipules, and plant distortion.

Vernacular names
• Deutsch: scharfes Adermosaikvirus der Erbse
• English: Pea enation mosaic virus-1
PEMV-1
• Français: virus 1 de la mosaïque énation du pois

The disease is transmitted by aphids in a circulatory manner, mainly by Acyrthosiphon pisum. The disease affects legumes like pea, broadbean, sweet pea and alfalfa. It can lead to significant yield losses.
