Lolium perenne perenne (weed) L. - (perennial ryegrass)

This species is grown as turf and forage grass, but on natural grassland may be a volunteer weed, relacing the indigenous flora. It can also be a problem in turf during attempts to grow a different grass species. In the soil seeds germinate within one year and are no longer viable after that time. It is mainly controlled by herbicides.

Perennial ryegrass is closely related to Italian ryegrass which is often regarded as a separate species, rather than a subspecies. It differs from Italian ryegrass in having fewer florets per spike (3-10) and usually narrower leaves (2-6 mm wide).
