Lilioceris cheni (weed bioagent) Gressitt and Kimoto, 1961 - (air potato leaf beetle)
This leaf beetle is native to tropical parts of Asia, including southern China, India, Vietnam and Nepal. It feeds on air potato vines (Dioscorea bulbifera) and has been released in Florida against this invasive weed. Almost 500,000 beetles have been released between 2012 and 2015, but by 2015 the beetle had not become established in all parts of Florida (Overholt et al., 2016).
The larvae are grayish (yellowish initially) with black legs, head capsule and prothorax. They feed on the leaves, as do the adults, defoliating them, and also on the bulbils. The 4 larval stage are completed in little more than a week.
