Leveillula G. Arnaud 1921

This genus of powdery mildew fungi appears to be native to the Mediterranean region and warmer parts of Central Asia. However it has spread to other parts of the world. It contains around 20 species which have simple appendages on the ascocarps, in contrast to the genus Phyllactinia where the appendages have a bulbous base. The mycelium partly penetrates the host plant in contrast to several other powder mildew genera which only live superficially on the leaves. Some species cause important diseases on crops, especially on those from the family Solanaceae. The most common species is Leveillula taurica which is widely distributed and infects a variety of crops.

For a taxonomic revision of the genus see Khodaparast et al. 2012.
