Chamaemyiidae - Leucopis (predators) Meigen, 1830 - (silver flies)

The family Chamaemyiidae or silver flies includes small (1-5 mm) flies which have larvae that are predators of small Hemiptera like aphids, adelgids or mealybugs. The cuticle of the adult flies is typically covered with a whitish powder. The individual genera and species often have a restricted host range of prey. The family has 28 genera and more than 300 species (Gaimari, 2012 - Zootaxa 3342).

The larvae in the genus Leucopis are mainly aphid predators, but some species prey on adelgids like Leucopis argenticollis, a predator of the hemlock woolly adelgid.

Type species: Leucopis griseola
